Course Details:

A cross country courses is an excellent way to introduce yourself to cross country flying. Likewise, they’re a great way to improve your flying skills if you already have XC experience. Careful consideration is given when accepting pilots onto the course to ensure pilots on each course are of similar ability. Courses are consistently successful and it’s common for pilots to achieve personal best flights in distance, duration and/or altitude. The feedback is always positive.

Our classroom and base in Cardrona is centrally located and works perfectly. Courses are 5 days in duration, spread over a 7 day period. This allows us to “drop” the 2 worst days ensuring our chances of flying are maximised. Courses utilise sites around Wanaka, with Queenstown sites as backup in case of strong wind.

Courses cover:

  • Equipment and Preparation
  • Weather Forecasting
  • Route Planning
  • Sources of Lift
  • Glider Control
  • Flying Efficiently
  • Climbing and gliding
  • Cross Country Strategy
  • Flight Analysis and Review
  • Fear, Stress and Performance
  • Goal Setting

Courses can be tailored to your specific needs. If you want a longer course or something completely different, we can help. Why not get a group together and have us travel to you? North Island, Canterbury and Nelson courses can be run on request.

XC Course Testimonials:

XC BriefingGrant Maslowski:

“I highly recommend Paraventures, with Mark and Mel. I did the XC course and it was way above my expectations. Practical instruction doesn’t get any better than having Mark talking you through thermalling techniques while circling together in the same thermal – it was unbelievable how Mark would answer my questions just before I was about to ask. Mel was great in support too, in the air and on the ground. The theory instruction was brilliant, with thorough analysis of determining and interpreting weather conditions. The location is spectacular too. A+.”

Gareth Gore:

“Found the XC course changed my thinking about flying, not so much the getting high, but “whats my next move”, “where do I go and why? ” ready for when I get to cloudbase, I find I now pay more attention to the other mountains and sky while I’m thermaling to get ready to move on. Many thanks.”

Duncan Macnab:

“The XC course that Mark runs is really worthwhile. He is an exceptional pilot who is a gifted teacher. His experience and knowledge means that the theory sessions are easy to understand yet explain things so that they make sense, the weather and site analysis, the preflight briefings, the radio instruction, the encouragement and the practical tips were all brilliant. And WOW – after 2 years of trying it came together and I got my 20k flight nailed – 27.5km, 6900ft and 58 mins. Can’t ask for a better outcome than that.”
